Need mazda 5 speed rebuild help

I have a 94 F159 2WD-, 300-6 with a 5 speed manual. 250,000 miles. The transmission is starting to whine. Mechanic tells me it is probably the input shaft bearing.

Has anyone replaced this themselves? How hard is it to do? Any special tools needed ? Any helpful tips or otherwebsites to go for advice?

I do have a well equipped shop and we are experienced in engine rebuilds and such things. Just never had a reason to do a transmission before.
Thanks, Al.

The mazda 5 speed is one of the easiest standard trans to work on in my opinion. If it is the imput shaft bearing all you have to do is remove trans unbolt top of trans cover and remove, Remove slave cylender remove front beraing bolts turn input shaft until flatspot on input clears cluster gear and remove from trans. Press new bearing on shaft drain and clean trans case reinstall and refill with atf. the complete trans can be rebuil with no special tools unlike the zf trans that requires boxes ofpuller etc.

5 speed

I dont remember it being that easy to change the input bearing. Seems to me like I had to remove the rear bearing retainer also, so that the cluster would drop down, to give clearence for the syncro teeth.Thats with the flat toward the cluster gear.

Weather the shaft clears or not will depend on the application and gear ratios. you should not have to drop the counter shaft you may have to first remove or pull the output shaft back still not a difficult procedure nor does it require special tools. Just remove tail shaft housing lock in 2 gears to loosen large nut on rear, remove overdrive and i believe reverse idler and continue dissassembly. the large lock nut is staked down you will have to loosen the stake with a small chisel or punch. If you are lucky you still may get the imput shaft right out, good luck.
