popping out of 4WD

Got a big snow today so I threw my 97 F150 into 4WD going about 5MPH. About a 100yards later it popped out of 4WD while making a loud clunking / grinding noise. So I put it back in 2WD and tried again, same thing.

Next I tried to put it into 4Low just to see what would happen. Same thing. Sounds like it is comming from the transfer case but could be the front end not sure.

One more thing. When it makes this noise the 4WD light on the dash is still on but I know it has popped out of 4WD because my rear end slides out like it is in 2WD at the same time. It also pops back into 4WD when I slow back down.

With 8 inches of snow on the ground what a time for the 4wd system to crap out. Any suggestions???

I have been searching this forum trying to find an answer but the only thing that I have found is that the air lines on the right side wheel well may be cracked and not allowing it to fully engage. I have a manual shifter on the floor and I dont think that I have air lines.
