Angry trans knock

Anyone.............my '04 FX4 is making a knocking sound. Thought it was my motor, but after crawling under my truck last night and listening I discovered the sound apparently is coming from my bellhousing area. It only starts knocking after my truck warms up.

Any comments/advise?????????

Dirtyd0g............

I'm transmission impaired........what's a flexplate and is there a way to tell if that's the problem without tearing the tranny apart???

The flexplate is the part on the back of the engine that connects to the torque converter. It is the part the starter drives to start the vehicle. You do not have to dismantle the trans ,but you will have to remove it to inspect the flexplate.

Alan-

If it were a problem with the flexplate wouldn't that create a problem with starting and why would it only happen once the motor gets warmed up?

A small crack in the flexplate can cause a knock noise, but no other problems. It might not do it when it is cold because the metal is cold and shrunk up because of temperature. As the metal warms the crack will expand. I'm not sure that is your problem ,but that would be my best guess without having the vehicle here.

Yeah, it's under 36k. I was just checking it out before I have to do without my rig for 3 or 4 days while they check it out. Thanks for the input.
