Question Manual to Auto?

I have a stupid question? I own a '98 F150 4X4 that is in pre-steen condition. Now it has a 4.2 manual and plain jane otherwise. The tranny & clutch needs replacing. I was thinking can this be converted into an automatic? How hard would it be? Are parts between the two interchangable? Can it be done? Or should I just leave well enough alone and replace the clutch and tranny? I'm hoping someone can give me advice and/or encouragement?

Thanks Adam

I hate automatics, they rob power, add wheight to a car/truck. Only advantage to a automatic is for towing, your clutch is not pushing or pulling all the wieght of what you tow.

If your albe to drive a 5sp, this is not a big deal, but if you can't find them and grind them, or invent your own, stick with a automatic.

with your 4.2 you will get more performance and milage with a 5sp, if you want a truck with automatic, I would move to a 4.6 or 5.4.

If you really want a automatic with your 4.2, you can do it, I beleave you will have to change your flywheal and you will have to find donar parts. coloum shifter, rods linkage ect.

EDIT: spelling

Here is a partial parts list.

Transmission including Torque Converter and Flexplate, Drive shaft, Possible transmission mount, Transmission wire harness, PCM from an automatic. Steering column from an automatic with shifter intact and cable. Instrument cluster shift position indicator if not included with column. If that is not available separately then the whole instrument cluster. The jumper for the clutch pedal position switch. What do you plan on doing about the pedals? Replace them or keep the clutch? If I think of anything else I will post. This should give you and Idea of the work involved.
