Question Howdy, Clutch Job???

Howdy all. Site was recommended from thedieselstop.com

My dad has a 97 150 4x4 with a 4.6L and 5 speed. It has 90000miles and the clutch slips a little in first under heavy acceleration. We dont ride it, but for a while before i got my powerstroke we towed a trailer that was prolly to big for a 150.

My question, how soon should the clutch be replaced after a minor slippage is noted. Also, how hard is a replacement on this truck? I have done a 91 150 4x2 myself so how would that compare?

Any thoughts would be grateful except the "switch to a slushbox". Handshakers forever in our fleet.

The 4x4's are quite a bit more difficult to do. The torsion bars will have to be released which requires a special tool. Make sure you mark them to install them exactly as they came out. After you get the 4x4 stuff out of the way it's just like doing a 4x2

The exhaust system must be renoved. The torsion bars can be removed with out the tool. Just loosen the bolt till it comes out. I have seen some pull the tranny with the T-case still attached. I don't do mine like that, I pull it off first. You have to remove the lower shift lever for clearance in the tranny tunnel when removing and reinstalling. The bītch of this is that you have to leave the tranny in neutral to remove the lower lever but this then doesn't allow you to turn the output shaft to line up the splines on the inputshaft and the clutch disk. If you leave the lever attached it scrapes in the tranny tunnel and screws up the engine/tranny alignment.

I have put two clutches in mine and 3 slaves. It takes me 8 hours to R&R a clutch or a slave on my truck. If the clutch slipped only once then leave it alone till it realy needs it. That is what I would do.

Thanks guys, I figured it wouldnt be just a simple job. It only slipps when in first goin hard, so i will just tell dad to go easy. I have a powerstroke when i want to move. Can a slippin clutch damage anything as it gets worse?

The only other thing that it will damage is your ego when you get beat by a little old lady driving 1976 Chevette
