2wd to 4wd swap

Here is my question. I have a 1998 F-150 extra cab styleside with the 4.6litre motor and 2wd drivetrain, i wan wondering how interchangable a 2wd system is with a 4wd system, more specificly, the AWD/4WD system out of the 1998 Lincoln Navigator. I know that I would have to change the transmission, add the transfer case, front differential, and the front suspension (axels and whatever else), not to forget all the wiring. Are there unused mounting points on the 2wd trucks that a 4wd system would just bold up into or is it a big thing where I would have make new mounts and all sorts of fun fabricating? The reason I ask this is that my Grandfather gave me his old truck and I go to school in New Hampshier. I can't "look a gifthorse in the mouth" and sell the truck to buy a 4wd truck, and sinse I didn't pay anything for the truck, I'm just curious as to how difficult this install would be. Thanks - John

What you are talking about doing is WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY more trouble than it is worth. You are missing cross members and strengthening supports necessary to install the Navigator drive train in your truck. I have done crazy transformations like this to older trucks, and I can tell you that with all the computer operated gizmos in newer vehicles, I wouldn't even try it. By the time you finish fabricating and buying components, you could have bought your grand-dads truck and the navigator.

Just make up something going wrong with the truck (so you won't look like a complete a$$ to your grand-dad), and buy yourself a 4x4

Thanks, that was all I needed to hear. I was just curious because i'm looking to get involved in a a project, and that would be a bigger project than i wanted.
