truck started slipping

Hi,

I have a 99 F-150 V6 w/AODE. There is 134,000 or so miles on it. While driving down the road, coming to a stop, and then taking off again, the transmission didn't go into gear. It felt like the transmission sort of slipped into nuetral for a few seconds. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the normal mileage for a transmission rebuild?

Hey dude,

Just this week I experianced the exact same problem at a stop light. I've got a 99 f-150 8 foot box and only have about 77 000km
I hope this doesn't lead to a trany replacement.

keep me posted.

I just went through that with my 97 Expy with the E40D. I was going down the freeway and noticed the trans temp gauge nearing 220. I got off the freeway and pulled into a parking lot and just as I was coming to a stop I heard a slight whine from the tranny. I let it sit for a few minutes and headed back the 2 miles to home. The tranny temp gauge hit 20 again so I pulled off the first exit and put it in Neutral at the top of the ramp. Put it back in D and nothing happened. I revved the engine and nothing. Let it sit for a minute and then it whined and engaged. I made it to the next stoplight and it disengaged and wouldn't take off. Let it sit a little longer and it engaged again. Needless to say when I got to my driveway it was coasting to a stop. The next morning it shifted fine for a mile or so then slipped again.
Took it to a friend at a tranny shop and they tore it down after seeing a ton of metal in the pan. The builder showed me a large 6"-8" snap ring that had let go. This allowed a large cluster of gears to start moving back and forth slightly which in turn destroyed the Torrington bearing and ultimately the converter. $1,900 later it runs fine.
I'm not saying this is what happened to your tranny but if you can get it checked early and don't drive it 5 miles like I did you might be able to save a bunch of money on hard parts.
The funny thing is I had just pulled my Jeep on a trailer (5,600 lbs) 200 miles in the heat 2 days before and it ran perfect with tranny temp gauge never going over 155 degrees or so. This problem happened in 1 day.

My '97 5.4L with E4OD did something similar. Mine would take off fine (at first) but would do a hard 1-2 shift. From 2-3 it would slip depending on the situation. In the end, the tranny ate itself, I dropped the pan to find a nice sparkling red mess. I had to replace the transmission. Mine happened around 97000 miles.
