5 Speed Trouble

I've been the proud owner of 1952 and 1964 F100's but this
past week I bought my first F150. It's a 2000 with 59890 miles
and my 3rd gear grinds a bit if you try to put it in quick. Now
this thing has ATF in it according to the book that came with it
and I'm not familar with how that works or do I have a bad
synchronizer? Do these new fangled trannys have them? How
do you adjust this clutch...or can you?
I'm new here with you fellers and kinda new with new
vehicles...so if yaw can help, I'd be thankin' ye.

This topic has been pretty much beat to death on the forum. you might try a "search". Some have had success adding a Lucas transmission additive. 1 Qt Lucas and the rest ATF. I've personally found that just changing the ATF helps. But you'll probably always have a notchy 3rd gear. It seems that is just how they are.

I have the 5-speed too. I switched it to synthetic trans oil... and it shifts like brand new. I used to have that problem with 3rd all the time....( and 1st, and second....) anyway... the synth oil really helped quite a bit. Now if I can just shorten the throws a little bit ....

what did you use for synthetics? I have heard that some synthetics make it shift better at first but end up destroying the synchros and then you have to rebuild.

Well fellas...I changed the fluid and used one bottle of Lucas
with it ( the old fluid looked like chocolate milk ) and I though
it had helped but I drove a good bit of city drivin' one day and
I found that it still acts up going into 3rd. It does alot better
when it's short trips...does anybody else notice that the hotter the ole tranny gets, the more it is ap to grind if you don't shift
slow?
My old 1952 could shift quicker than this 2000 F150. What
is the offical view from Ford on this matter?

I use Conklin oil. I use it in the Engine, Rear Diff, and the Trans.

I have been using it for about 3 years on all of my vehicles and all of my relitives vehicles. I have never had any problems...only positives. I have never heard of anything about it being bad for the synchros but I could be wrong.

I had one 5spd replaced and then a new 3rd gear synchro put in after that because of occasional 3rd gear grind.

At the first sign of a grind after the last repair, I put in Redline MTL per recommendation of a local speed shop. The shifting slowly improved and now the tranny shifts very nice. And it is quieter, to boot.

There is no magical cure if your synchro is out, but if it is just starting to act up, MTL is definately worth trying - give it some time to work though.

I use gm syncromesh fluid in all of these transmissions.
It has never given me a problem and lasts much longer.

The gm synchrmesh is the one i heard about ruining synchros but this was in certain cars. The one thing i learned is that pennzoil makes it for GM so if you buy the pennzoil it is much cheaper.

How do you know ?

How can you tell if that cotton pickin' notchy grind (I have in
my 3rd gear only) is what we are all talking about, and Redline
MTL will help, or is my synchros are too far gone. I bought
this 2000 F150 about 3 weeks ago and it has just over 60Ks
on it.

BusterBoy,

I just traded off my 2000 F150 with the 5 speed. I occasionally had the 3rd gear grind when shifting quickly, I just learned to shift a little slower. I don't think it was ever that big a problem. I traded the truck with 130k on it and never had anymore problem with the tranny than the occasional grind. BTW, I used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in the tranny and changed it every 30k.
