Which Transmission Is The Strongest?

I have a '97 light duty F-250 4x4. I'm told they used 2 different (automatic) transmissions. I thought mine has the 4EOD. Does that sound right? Which is the stronger tranny?

The options are 4r70w and 4r100(E40D).
The 4r100 is the strongest unit

The 4r100 is the bigger heavier stronger transmission. 4r70w's are also used in cars.

well it is all how it is setup. Yes from the factory the 4r100 is said to be stronger. It is in the lightning but at its limits there. I have the 4r70w (race built $1500) behind a lightning engine and it is holding up just fine. and keep in mind that some of those cars (mustangs) are pushing 1000hp. Now those are built but they still can handle it.

I won't knock a 4r70w transmission. I really like the 4r70w's but in stock form the 4r100 is considerably stronger.

I once asked an engineer at ford why the lightning got the massive 4r100 instead of the considerably lighter 4r70w. The answer I got was that the 4r70w could not support the torque and weight of a lightning. The 4r100 went through many upgrades from it's earlier e40d status. The new 5r110 is very impressive. If only ford would give up on the crappy 3 plate lockup.

Don't think that the 4r100 in indestructable. It is almost at its limit in a stock lightning. Mod it a bit and she'll start coming loose.
Try timskelton.com and read up on the 4r100

I build the converters for them. I know the limits of a stock 4r100, but it is stronger than a stock 4r70w.

it is the e40d Predecessor, taking on much of the same parts but has been revised some.

Thumbs up 4r70w vs 4r100

I installed a B&M shift kit in my 4r70w & it gives me positive shifts, better throttle response and improved gas mileage. I installed it right after I purchased the truck (new in 99) and now have over 117 thousand miles. I don't do a lot of towing but every few months I rent a camping trailer. (1500 lbs tow weight) No probs with tranny at all.

That's backwards. The E4OD was the predeccessor to the 4R100, meaning the 4R100 replaced the E4OD.
