Not too long ago, I was driving on near Boise, ID and I heard a load whining/vibration noise then I noticed smoke coming from the bottom of the truck 90 stock 2wd F150 long bed auto/5.0L. I pull over and see tranny fluid everywhere and a seal from the read of the tranny where the U joint connects appearing pulled out. Towed to a shop and after inspection... was told that I needed a new tranny to the tune of $2300. I called around and ended up talking with AAMCO. They said that they would tow mthe truck to their shop for inspection at no charge and anywhere else if I was not satisfied with their quote (2nd tow free, too). AAMCO: Bad U joint $278 and tranny was fine.
AAMCO mgr said 1/2-2/3 of 2nd opinion tranny rebuilds don't need rebuilds and avg cost has been <$400. Bottom line... 2nd opinion saved me big cash and the tranny has another 6K miles on it since with NO problems.
