Truck shuts off when put in gear

This is my good friends '99 Expedition w/ 5.4. I went to take a look at it yesterday to get an idea of what was going on. The truck fires up just fine, it's just when you put it in gear that it imediately dies out. He said that a few days ago when this started to happen it would make a loud metallic scraping noise when in reverse or drive, yet it wouldn't die out. There are no noises now when shifting from park. My first guess was maybe a TCC lock up switch/solenoid sticking. I'm not very familiar with ford vehicles so I don't know really know where to start looking. Is this somewhat common on these truck? Am I looking in the right direction? Thanks for any and all help.

So, would just the torque converter need replacement or more than likely the entire trans? You are talking about the torque converter lock up dics/clutches right? Thanks for the help.
