Question What type of transmission?

I'm having a hard time finding out what kind of transmission I have?

02' F-150 FX4 4X4 5.4

I'm trying to purchase an after market pan with a larger fluid capacity and a drain plug. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys!

If it's a 5.4, there's about a 98% chance it's a E4OD/4R100. The 4R70W uses a pan that's almost square, an E4OD pan is rectangular except on one end, where it's got sort of an extended corner sticking out of it. I can't remember how many pan bolts which one has or what code on the door tag means what, but that's how I tell the difference between 'em.

So, to recap: Nearly square pan = 4R70W. The 70W will have a sump that sticks out the bottom of the pan almost dead center and makes life very interesting when you don't have the trans jack set up right with some 2x4s for support when removing the transmission. Ask me how I know.

I appreciate the info. Does anybody know where I can get a drain plug kit to add a plug to the stock tranny cover?

it is easier to get a late design pan adding drain plugs in stock pans can be alot of trouble(leaks)
just make sure you use the filter that goes with the pan
did you determine what trans you have i may be able to get you a pan with a drain plug in it

Look at your transmission code on the driver's side door jamb sticker. "U" is a 4R70W and "E" is a 4R100. You can add a B&M drain plug kit to either pan and there are numerous aftermarket pans for both as well.

Slag-
Very few 1997-2003 F-150s have the 4R100. Supercharged Harleys and Lightnings, and VERY FEW regular 5.4s come with it. 6-cylinders, 4.6s, and MOST 5.4s all come with the 4R70W.

I have a 2000 F150 Supercab 4x4 with the 5.4L engine and I have the 4R70W tranny. My 95 Mark VIII Lincoln also has a 4R70W. It was 96 before Ford put the pan with the bulge on. It helps the tranny pump from starving for oil when you get on the gas. On my list of things to do is to buy the same pan and filter that my truck requires and put it on the Mark tranny.

Gotcha. I thought I read that a majority of the early 5.4 liters came with the 4r100. My 97 4x4, offroad package, tow package has a tranny code of E on the door. It has the 5.4 as stated above as well.

That sounds like a nice truck. You're lucky to have the 4R100. It's nice to comfortably handle more power in stock form.

Thanks Max!.. You're the 2nd or 3rd person to say that. I might have to go sell it to get a supercrew.

I've had it a couple weeks now and its a nice ride.

I just finished putting plugs in it and cant wait to check to see how much my mpg improves if any. The old plugs were stock motorcraft plats with 149k on them. After 149k miles, they were gapped around .080 with pitting on the electrode and other crud.

MERCON/MERCON V?

Hello Everyone,

I've got some Valvoline and Havoline
MERCON V ATF. The labels for both mention state that they are compatible with both MERCON V and MERCON, as well as Dextron III.

Although the dipstick and the manual say to use only MERCON, can I use this in the 4R100 without damaging the transmission?

Thanks for your time.
