You have a 4r70w transmission with the common torque converter shudder. Change the fluid and install a cooler. Mercon V fluid only.

Question

The 2005 already has a cooler installed from the factory.. Do you think the dealer will replace the fluid with the mercon V . Remember it only has 2000 miles on it!!

It's under warranty so make them fix it. If it is that new I'd say some slag got in that converter clutch when it was welded together. I see that alot with the new units. They are probably going to have to replace the converter.

Lightbulb Torque Converter Shudder

Torque Converter Shudder

THank God i found this site and topic!!!

I just bought a 01 SC w/ 115,000 miles on it from Dallas. I live in Omaha and was driving back just tonight. After 500 miles of highway driving into the trip, the infamous "torque converter shudder" sank my heart with visons of large repair bills. I want to say that before I bought the truck i had it inspected by AutoCritic of dallas.

Here are the specifics of my occurance:

1. Cold 25 F and drizzling tempature
2. Only After shifting into fourth gear on the highway the shudder starts
3. The MPH range is from 45-65, any faster and the problem does not occur

Thanks to everyone who wrote in on this problem to the site. I found a link that describes the problem also with the 4R70W tranny. Will try to replace oil, plugs, wires and write back.....

Thumbs up Shudder in 4th (OD)

I have a 1997 F-150 w/4.6 and 135,000 that shuddered when under a load (usually uphill). Everyone said the tranny was on its way out. Tried synthetics, additives, flushing and nothing changed. Took it to a transmission shop that a friends Father-in-law owns and he found that a plug wire had grounded itself and was causing the computer to act abnormal under loads. I am glad you can still find an honest mechanic.
