Throw Out Bearing Question

Okay guys after solving some of the other minor problems, my boyfriend and I took my truck to a mechanics shop today and asked him to go for a ride so he could listen to the noise coming from under my truck, it was like a clicking noise, kinda sounded like when you try to crank your truck and your not getting any battery power - that kind of clicking. But this clicking occurs only when you hit third, fourth and overdrive. Its a standard 5 speed transmission 4.2 L engine (97). Anyway the mechanic tells me that its the throw out bearing and he wants to replace the clutch , some kind of pressure plate, and the throw out bearing. The costs for parts is about $259, labor $185. Now I do not have a problem with the labor part. But isn't $259 a little high for the parts and do all of these parts need to be changed out? Oh and there a charge of 32.50 to resurface the fly wheel, which I'm not complaining about either. Can anyone tell me if this sounds right?

I doubt his diagnosis. The throwout bearing is only used when you are depressing the clutch. Otherwise it just sits on the transmission input shaft, not spinning. If it doesn't make any noise when the clutch is depressed, I wouldn't worry about it, if the noise is indeed coming from the throwout bearing. When throwout bearings go bad, they usually make a grinding noise when you depress the clutch pedal, because one side of the bearing is motionless against the clutch linkage and the other side is spinning the same speed as the clutch/engine. Like I said, I doubt the diagnosis. I would just keep on running it. If it gets worse, it will be easier to diagnose. If it doesn't get worse, it isn't serious. Keep on Trucking!

First, if the clicking sound was made by the release bearing it would make the noise in all gears including neutral. When does the noise occur? Pedal pressed or not? At what RPM does it occur? I would not R&R your clutch for only $185.00 I would charge closer to $500.00

throwout bearing

It turns out it's the u-joint that is the problem! I let someone else drive and really listened and the noise was coming from the rear of the truck. Changed out the rear u-joint and poof nor more trouble, thanks guys for all of your help.

Isn't it amazing how a "mechanic" can misdiagnose some problems? I would avoid that particular mechanic in the future.
