new here, tranny help

Ok guys, I reg'd here just to help my dad with his truck. I'm more of an import turbo guy(~400whp nissan 240sx) but I fig'd you guys could help me.

He has a 96 i6 f150 with the 5 speed. From my readings, the mazda tranny has its..quirks. His problem is that if you are stopped, it refuses to go into any gear. He has to shift around until it goes into reverse, then it will go into 1st. I replaced the fluid with non-synth mercon III with a shift additive. stayed the same.

I looked around and couldn't even find the clutch master or slave cylinder to bleed(that engine bay is so foreign to me). i looked at the pedal thinking that it was adjusted improperly and was not pressing the slave all the way in, but it does not use the threaded shaft style like my rx-7 and 240. ie, it looks nonadjustable.

I had an rx-7 with a failing tranny and lots of bearing noise and Redline made it new again. Has anybody used the Redline D4 ATF with good results? Or do i stick with the OE Ford fluid and the ford additive? I love Redline and want to use it but read of one occurance where the Ford fluid worked better. If the tranny was poor with OE fluid, I don't think more OE fluid would help. However, I am open to any suggestion.

big thanks

My son's 95 5 speed V6 Mustang was the same. It was difficult to shift the gears. I think all Mustangs 5 speeds were like this. What a pita! When he moved to NYC and didn't need the car any more, I would have kept the car, but I couldn't take that aggravating 5 speed. My old 4 speed Muncie Chevelles were a joy to drive with that slick tranny.

He said that in the morning when it starts and the revs are up(cold start) he cannot get it into gear...but once the revs come down it will go into gear fine. I know Redline rocks when it comes to cold shifting...so maybe..hmm
