89 F150 Custom Tran swap

Need to know how deep a mess I am thinking of getting into! I have a 89 Ford custom with a 300 6 cyl motor and a 3 speed automatic. Drive 55 and you get 15 mile to the gal drive 65 and you get 13 miles to the gal. Want to swap to an AOD (not a AOD-E). Want more mileage from the truck. I am very good at wrenching but this is my first tanny swap. Is this one possible without a lot of issues. What should I be looking out for. I am not really FORD truck knowledgeable. I have owed several but never consider this kind of work on one. Usually do up the body and engine then resell for a few $$ after driving several years. I do not believe in buying new except for the old lady. Please tell me this is an easy swap if I can find an 89 AOD from the junk yard to pull and rework. advise is welcome.
