All wheel vs 4 wheel problem

98 epedition with 5.4 and all wheel drive as well as 4 wheel high and low. I recently purchased this vehicle and I think something is wrong with 4 wheel high. If I put it in all wheel drive as far as I know it seems to work fine with the light in the dash showing all wheel drive. If I put it in 4 wheel high the light will flash between 4 wheel high and all wheel drive on the dash. I also hear what sound like a clicking from the dash area everytime it switches between the two. 4 wheel low seems to work fine with a steady light. I'am wondering if something is wrong.

Also is it okay to tow in all wheel drive. Owners manuel does not address this.

Last question. I tow about 1600 pounds. Is it okay to tow in overdrive as long as no shifting going on.

thanks Tom S
