Wrong lubricant in transfer case?

All right guys, I just pulled the plug on the tranfers case, as I replaced the transmission filter, and the Haynes manual, and my owners manual both state that the transfer case uses Mercon transmission fluid, just like the tranny. The problem is someone had the transfer case full of gear oil. I have replaced this with the called for Mercon. Has anyone experienced this and should I have any concerns. The 4wd operated just fine during 8 or 10 different times I have been in the mountains with the truck.

I do not have experience with this but I would not be too concerned about it. The transfer case is mostly gears and maybe a chain. They used to be lubricated with gear oil before the switch to transmission fluid.

I would run it with the Mercon for a few miles, drain and fill again with Mercon. That way you can be sure the gear oil is cleaned out. I'm not sure if gear oil and trans fluid are compatable.

Sounds good! Why not top it off with a little K-Y jelly?
