New Driveline (at a price)

Back in October, I had a problem- my Eaton posi failed. Big time. The spider gears apparently had been wearing into the shaft they reside on, probably for all 18,000 miles of its use (judging by the 1/8" of missing material), and after experiencing the heat of a 600 mile trip, welded themselves together. When this happened, not only did the rear grenade, it took with it the gears, cracked the tailshaft off the trans, and warped the pressure plate. Naturally, the destruction couldn't be complete until the tow truck operator put his hooks on the front axel boots. After dealing with the local Aamco shop, who had told me it was only the clutch and it would be "put back together in the morning" (they never took it apart), I ended up renting a Uhaul truck and trailer to bring home (I guess I should mention it didn't fit on the trailer they said it would, overhanging by about 3", and that the tire straps wouldn't go over the stock-height tires, forcing me to use $80.00 worth of new straps).
Eaton did send me a new unit after inspecting the remains of the old one and realizing it was because of a defect, but that was the end of the support I received. So I await my new trans, which should be here any day, to see if my string of bad luck is ending or only begining...

Why a new tranny? Warped pressure plate? It sounds like you have a 4x4 manual. The extension housing is replacable as a seperate item and it is attached to the T-case.

When I say tailshaft, what I mean is the end of the mainshaft that runs through the trans. That part alone will cost me $550, and with all the other worn parts in there, it will be the same price with labor if I get the old one fixed or get a new onw. As for the pressure plate, it actually twisted in the area where it meets the flywheel, but why I really can't say- as far as what's normal, only one part (the weakest) should fail at a time. Somehow ALL mine went. You should see these things... looks like old race wrecks.
