I have that problem too. I don't think there is much of a fix for it. You might want to try changing to a synthetic transmission fluid. The only way I've been able to stop the grind (I call it a chunk) is to shift slower. It sucks but these transmissions don't shift well at high rpms.

Always flush and bleed the clutch before you get into the tranny.

Also, a good synthetic tranny fluid like Redline MTL is worth a try.

If that does not work look for clutch and/or syncro problem.

clutch check

I can't remember how to check the clutch for slipping. It was something like, place e-brake on shift to 3rd bring rpm up to ~2000 and begin to let clutch out slowly if it stalls thats good and if it does not the clutch is bad.

The best test for clutch slippage is in top gear (5th). Just floor it in top gear. If your rpm's climp quicker than you are accelerating the clutch is slipping because in 5th the clutch sees the highest torque.

Gear grinding at high rpm's is probably slow synchros, either they're not performing up to snuff or you're shifting it like a Mustang and they're not designed for that. 1-2 is usually the hardest shift to make. Some cars such as the VW Corrado use double synchronizers to overcome this problem. The synchros spin up the next gear to match your engine rpm so the gears can mesh together.
