I have a '90 F150 XLT w/130K miles, 5.0L and E40D (I believe).
A few days ago while returning from a trip, out of the blue when I was doing 70mph in cruise control, the engine started revving high and the speed started slowing. I was in Od (overdrive).
I dropped it down to D (3 gears) and pulled over to the side of the road. Checked the tranny fluid and the level was OK and the color was red w/ no burnt or unusual smell.
When I put it in Od it shifts through the first 3 gears OK, but when it goes into 4th, the engine revs "freewheeling" and the speed starts dropping.
When I put it in D, it shifts all 3 gears a little clunky but OK.
I'm afraid to put it on the road for any distance for fear that the 4th gear slipping is the first of more failures.
Has anyone had this happen? Any ideas what is wrong or how to fix it based on the info I gave?
I have not taken it to a tranny shop yet, but will soon.
Would it be better to rebuild the current transmission, buy a rebuilt one and install it or do something else? Any info or opinions is appreciated.
I'm having the exact same issue in my 95gt with an AODE- The OD band is still good because when I drop into L2 at about 50mph engine revs and I still have engine braking.
