Questions about 1994 F150 Tranny

Hey,

Quick question, I have a 1994 F150, 5.8L 351 and have 98K on it. Today I was informed that my transmission was going to have to be replaced. 98K seems pretty young to me, is this a correct assumption? I've had the recommended maintenance done by the dealer who is know recommending a new transmission. New transmission is a used case with new parts in it and carries a 3/36 warrenty for about $3500 after tax.

Rebuilt is 1/12 warrenty starts at $1300 plus any parts that need replacing.

Just doing a sanity check, appreciate any input.

What is your tranny doing that made you have the Mechanics look at it?

Have you ever done any towing, or lots of carrying heavy loads in the bed?

I have a '94 F150 and had to replace mine at 76k miles, but I was towing a 6000lb travel trailer....

Usage of F150

Trans is an Automatic, but when going from 1st to 2nd, the thing kicks like a mule.

I've been using my truck to haul mostly contruction materials and my tools in the bed.

I put a lumber rack on it 2 years ago and have a shell. Mostly loaded it with tools. But I've carried drywall, tile and busted up concrete and rock and trash to the dump on occasion.

I've pulled UHaul trailors with it. But all the heavy loads are local. Longest roundtrip was 1500 miles and I did that twice. First time I came back loaded with tools and antiques, that was when it was 6 months old.

You know how F150 cools the Trans? I heard they do it with the radiator and I had that worked on about 8 months ago. Wondering if I had an overheating problem caused the trans to act up.

Or does the F150 have a seperate cooling system for the trans?

Thinking about stepping upto the F350 with a 6.0L Turbo Diesel. I just inherited a 27' Fleetwood and have nothing to tow it with. But worried about Trans cooling system on that. Any information you could give me or point me too I greatly appreciate it.

thank you in advance.

Well, I dont know if the tranny cooler comes standard or not. I think you have to have the Tow Package to get the "auxilary" cooler...
I personally do not think your radiator had much to do with your problems you are having with your tranny... If you dont have one, you can buy an aftermarket auxillary tranny cooler for your truck. You definately need one of your gonna pull a TT.....

I'm in the same boat as you actually.. Either put the money into my current truck (which I love), and chance it being "stout" enough and lasting, or trade her in on a new 3/4 or 1 ton quad cab... I'm also looking into the diesels but am not sure if I want one for a full time vehicle...
