Trany Problems?

Hey i have a 2000 F150 and im not sure if im having a trany problem or just normal. Ive started to notice that the trany really seems to kick in and out of some gears instead of just shifting smoothly. its not an extreme jult but it i can feel it shift and kinda vibrate. Its hard to explain kinda like one of those things you actually have to be there to feel for yourself. Its under 75000 miles so i think it is still covered by ford so i may have them take a look at it not like they would probably tell me unless there was a big problem. I dont even know why im posting this now since it seems like it one of those things i cant really even get an answer or opinion on.

How old is the fluid?

If you haven't changed the fluid for a while, you can have torque converter shudder. What happens is the TC locks and unlocks very rapidly and causes the entire truck to vibrate. It will do this as the TC locks in 3rd and 4th gear and also when you force a downshift by pressing the pedal.

My 98 F150 4.6L (115,000 Miles) would do what I think is the same thing. It would shutter between gears. It started around 60,000 miles and reappears every 30,000 or so. A simple fluid and filter change fixes it for me. I have been told to drain the TC also which I will do next time in hopes I can get more than 30,000 between changes.

Good Luck

I have an '00 F150 XLT Supercab and last night my check engine light came on while on the freeway and it started driving really rough in o/d. I took it out of O/D and it still ran rough but not as bad. When I got off the freeway, the truck would shake and it shuttered when I turned it off. It didn't do this at all when I had it in Park or neutral. I'm thinking the transmission is slipping? I bought this in April of this year and it only has 48K miles on it. I have an appt on Tues to take it to the dealership, I have the extended warranty. I checked my fluids and everything is fine. In fact the last time I got my oil changed, the tech said that I am fine on my transmission fluid, the guy 5000 mi before it said I needed to change it (he wanted $ out of me). ANy other suggestions as to what it could be? Not sure what type of transmission I have, the truck isn't at my house.

Thanks.

switch9,

Your truck is experiencing an engine problem rather than a transmission problem. That's why the check engine light is on. When there's a problem with the transmission, the TCIL (Overdrive ON/OFF light) blinks to let you know.

Rather than taking it to the dealer (may not be covered by the warranty) where they'll charge 1 hour labor to read the error code stored in the computer, you should go to a parts store like Autozone where they scan the codes for free. Get the code and post it here. You'll be amazed at how much knowledge there is on this board.

Actually: On a 2000, you may be a able to use your digital odometer to find which error code is set.

I don't feel safe driving it though, and it's about 40 mins away from where I live. What causes the coil pack to malfunction?
