How can i tell what trans i have? & slips

How can i tell what trans i have? It's a 97' F150 Lariat, 4.6, 3.55 axle, towing pkg.

My trans slips from from 1st to 2nd, ONLY WHEN COLD, around 50-60mph. When warm it's fine.
Thanks!

Trans. code is on the door jamb sticker and is abreviated"tr".
Cude U = E4OD
Code U = 4R70W
I believe most 4.6's were equiped with the 4R70.
Have you changed fluid/filter lately? Mercon III?
Seams it would throw a code if it slipped on the 1-2 at any temp.

Code U = 4R70W
Code E = E40D/4R100
Code U = 4R70

And yes, all 4.6L engines only came with the 4R70 not the 4R100.

The E4OD/4R100 is one of Ford's heavy-duty automatic transmissions.

4=4-Speed
R=Rear Wheel Drive
70=700 lb-ft Capability
W=Wide Gear Ratio

4=4-Speed
R=Rear Wheel Drive
100=1000 lb-ft Capability

How do you know if you have the 700 or 1000lb ft capacity?
My code is just the "E".....

Are thse tranny's good for towing?
How are the stock tranny coolers that come with the trucks?

E=4R100, though on a 1994, it's technically an E4OD.

That is Ford's heavy-duty automatic and yes, it is good for towing. The stock cooler is good depending on what you tow and the particular conditions. If you tow near the limits, in hot weather or hills, a transmission temp gauge should be considered.

Thanks.... I tow a 27' 6040lb travel trailer. I went through 1 tranny and 1 TC in one 6month period. Had the tranny put in with new tc and all 6 months ago after if went out on me during a camping trip. 4-5 months later, on our 2nd trip after having it fixed, my TC went out due to extreme overheating (said the shop). Luckily, it was still under warranty from the first repair. Needless to say, I want to avoid anymore future trouble. I really love my truck, (has the markIII coversion interior and all) so I dont really wanna have to trade her in on a larger truck unless I have to....
