Manual Transmission Swap

Is it possible to swap a heavier-duty transmission in for the 5-speed that came in the 1997 F-150. I have a 4x4 F-150 with the 4.6L and would like to tow something heavier than the 2700 pound towing capacity limit with the factory transmission.

Thanks,

tt

Hey! Welcome to the boards.

I can't really help you on this one, as I'm not aware of anything that can be done to up the tow rating. I think the 5.4 would accept the manual out of a Super Duty, but I don't think the 4.6 would. You could upgrade the clutch. I believe that is one of the major factors in the low tow rating.

I too would like to upgrade this manual transmission. I'm looking for better performance though. I would like to find a way to use a T56.

Some one might know so keep checking.

Good luck!

I have been trying to figure out some way to replace that POS transmission in my 99 4WD for years and have found nothing yet. You would think that there are standards that transmission manufacturers build to and that something else besides the Mazda tranny would fit.

The tranny from a Cobra R will bolt up. The tranny from a 5.4/6.8 SD will bolt up.
There are companies that are fitting the TREMEC to the Mustang. Your flywheel will have to be closely looked at. If you use the ZF from a Superduty you will have to make sure your engine is a Windsor. You have to use the flywheel & pressure plate from a SD. The input shaft on the ZF is 1 ¼ inch and the clutch is 12 inches in dia. The input shaft on the Mazda tranny is 1 1/16 inch and the clutch is 11 inches in dia. Unfortunatly the Flywheel from a Romeo engine has 6 bolts and the Windsor has 8 bolts so the SD flywheel will not fit on the Romeo.
