5-Speed Shifter Question

OK I hope this isn't a really stupid question, but the manual shifter on my 2002 F-150 5-speed seems to slowly rotate counter-clockwise. Every day I drive it I notice that the gear diagram has turned slightly -- is it coming lose or is it supposed to do this? I have 12K miles and never had any problems. Thanks.

I know I have seen this brought up before, but I don't remember the solution. My truck hasn't done it yet.

Your best bet. Take advantage of the search feature (icon in the upper right hand corner). Use the words "rotating shifter" and I think your answer will be there.

Good luck, and by the way, welcome to the boards!

The knob is probably not rotating but the insert that indicates gear location will rotate. It should not do this but eventually you will have the chance to glue it back in place when the knob comes off in your hand while shifting. Glueing the knob back on doesn't work very well either. It will last for a while but eventually comes lose again. I have now installed a new knob on mine that uses set screws to hold it in place. Maybe that will last but if not my next idea is tho cut threads on the stick and screw one on like it should have been anyway.

Thanks for the replies. It was the insert -- I had made sure that the knob itself wasn't moving, but didn't pay attention to the insert. Lately it has become noticeable loose. Haven't glued it yet. Before it had moved so slowly I didn't know it was coming lose. I guess I can't complain -- that's been the only problem with the truck! Even though I don't have a lot of options, I've been impressed with what a solid truck it is.

I have 105,000 miles on my 99 and it has been relatively problem free, just a few little irritating things. My biggest complaint has been with the local dealer that could not fix any of these little problems while it was still in warranty.
