ATF level

I just put in my Factory tech valve body in my 4r70W.

The procedure for checking the ATF level, as I understand it, is warm the truck up to normal operating temp.

1. Park the truck on level ground and with it still running put it through the gears.

2. Put it back into park and with the engine running pull out the dip stick and wipe it off.

3. reinsert dipstick and verify fluid level is in the hot range on the dip stick.

I verified that I took out at least 9-9.5qts by measuring the drained ATF (not including what I lost to rags). I put back roughly 9.25 qts.

I did the above procedure. Once the dip stick is wiped then reinserted and pulled back out there isn't any thing on the dipstick. The logical thing to do is add more. I'm reluctant to put too much more in, because I'm close to what I took out.

Is being half a qt or so low, enough to not show on the dip stick?

When I changed mine it took 11.5 to 12 qts. to fill it up (torque converter and pan)
One qt low should show on the dip stick, not sure about two.

It took 10 qts to get it inbetween the hot lines on the stick. Just seemed like more then I took out. I didn't want to overfill because i neglected to install a drain plug which probably would have only took 15 min.

guys, to make this easier to get an accurate reading, when you are filling the transmission--

When the tranny is empty, add 6 quarts to it.

Then start the car, and shift each gear and hold each gear for a couple seconds. Just shift through the gears and let them engage, don't go drive anywhere.

Then add the rest of the fluid, to get it up to the mark.
