manual transmission swap

My son has a 1986 F150 wheel drive pickup , 6 cylinder with 4speed manual transmission. This transmission has the granny low gear. We have acquired a 4 speed overdrive transmission out of a 1979 F150 and were wanting to put it in the 1986 truck. Does anyone know if this overdrive transmission will fit? I know the gearshift through the floor board won't but i can make a new hole. Thanks in advance, Kent

Manual Transmission Swap

I had ( and notive the word 'had' since it was stolen a number of year ago ) a 1986 F150 with the same manual tranny and the useless 'granny' gear. I swapped it out for the same year AOD automatic from a wrecked truck. They replaced the stearing column ( which had the automatic ****er on it ) and put a plate over the whole in the floor. I loved it and was sad to see my truck vanish into thin air. Anyway, hope it works for you.

Later....DN

Hmmm, wasn't aware the SROD was available in a '79, but you don't want it because it being a known WEAK unit. If you want overdrive, looky for a '88+ M5OD-R2. Plus the M5 is setup with a hydro clutch just like you have now.
