Trans/engine swap/rebuild questions

I have been doing searches trying to get info on this.

I have a 97 Expy 2WD with the 5.4, E4OD, and 3.73 gears. I will be keeping this vehicle for a long time.

When the trans goes, is it possible or cost effective to swap in a 4R100, or is it better to rebuild/upgrade the current trans with a kit like the one Factory Tech carries?

Same for the engine. Is it cost effective to swap in a 99 or newer 5.4? I assume this can be done with programming changes or that a new computer may be needed. Or will I be better off replacing the engine with the same type. I read somewhere that these engines can't be rebuilt.

Any help will be appreciated.

I have been talking with Factory Tech recently about the differances between the E4OD and the 4R100 and pretty much they are the same tranny with some internal differances I myself will be buying his upgrade kit for my E4OD when it is time for the rebuild of my trans. I think he said his parts upgrade brings the E4OD up to and beyond the stock 4R100 specs but maybe I misunderstood him.
