Talking 4R70W Factory Tech Valve Body Installed!!!

I was one of Greg's "lab rats" for his new 4R70W valve body setup, and just had it installed on thusday. all i can say is OMG!!!! without a doubt my BEST mod yet!!!!

here's a few pics...then i'll give my opinon at the bottom

This is a MUST DO mod if you have the slightest feel for performance at all! totally cleans up the sloppy lagging shifts and makes them nice and firm.

at light throttle, you can just feel the shifts a little bit
mid throttle, little bit firmer
WOT....damn! super firm shift...snaps right into 2nd gear! Never had belt squeak before, but now at WOT my belt sweaks every gear! LOL! Truck lunges right into gear though! 1-2 shift is super firm, 2-3 little less firm, 3-4 little less, but you definately know its shifting and going right into gear, unlike stock.

Hopefully the man Greg will pop in here and fill you guys in on the technical stuff and why its better than a chip setting or shift kit, but all i can say is you won't regret it!!!

Thanks again Greg!!!!

This is what I was hoping for! Hopefully I will have one installed this month. I plan to order me a gatorback belt also, since I already have belt squeel. What else did you replace? What kind of fluid? I have never done an install like this so I am a little nervous. I want to make sure I get it done right. My truck just shifts like junk right now, and I hope this gets the excitement back in it for me!!

OK sounds good but I have a question about the squealing sounds I was under the impression that the transmission pump itself is what casued the squeling sound do to the increased line pressure from the shift kit "aka" new valve body. Why would the Serpintine belt squeal when the trans shifts? I also have the squela but only at WOT and it usaully occurs just before the transmission shifts to the next gear. I had alway thought this was a pump problem. Greg can you enlioghten me on this one please?

Thanks,
Richard D.

I am sure someone else can explain the "why" part, but I know it's the belt that causes it, I have had mine replaced under warranty once already and that fixed it for a while, but as the belt wore and stretched it is doing it again.

PS: How did you get your registered portion of your profile to say: "Registered: Dec 1969" ?

It is becasue I am an orginal F150online "OG"

Really though the only reason it is like that is becasue I was an orginal member back when the site first started back in like 96 or 97 not sure exaclty which year it was. The site did not have the message boards but instaed had a daily digest that was sent out to everyone's e-mail there are a few of use around that have that date I know JMC is one other. Somehitng to do with how the system works.

Harley#356,

There you go, messing everything up for the rest of us! Do you have any idea how long the line at Gregg's door is going to be now for one of these bad boys! I hope I got my name on his list before your post hit. Seriously though, sounds like you got exactly what I'm looking for. Now I really can't wait! Glad it worked for you.

had a full fluid change then also, and filter too....replaced with Mercon V

I don't think the belt squeal is from the tranny pump having a problem. not sure why it does it, but it does it when it goes into 2nd and 3rd at WOT now. no big deal though. and this isn't just a shift kit, there's a difference between a shift kit and a whole new valve body and accumulator springs and servos. i can't explain it all, but I know Greg can.

This is definately a must do mod! Air filter yeah, chip yeah....FTVB DEFINATELY!!!

I realize it is not just a shift kit I only used that as a referance I actaully use to be very good at expaining all of that stuff and in fact use to be real good at rebuilding transmission. I actually have a degree in Auto Mechanics and part of the degreewas two years of trans study. Now in saying that it was about 20 years ago that I got that dgree and a whole bunch of things have changed since then and since I didnt keep on working and studying it a lot of that vast knowlegde has gone into hiding somewhere in this thick head of mine. I would however really like to know why the serpintine belts squesl when the trans shifts it just does not make any sense to me personally which is why I was hoping someone could explain it. I meran i relize that the crank shatf is connect to the torque converter via tha flywheel and all that good stuff but can't for the life of me figure out why it does what it does with the squeal.

just a guess based on .. . well nothing

a much more sudden change in rpm causes the belt to suddenly slow down on the down shift while the supercharger is still moving pretty fast, granted the supercharger doesnt hold too much intertia but i think if it would be fast enough to make a belt squeak.

Backyard Mechanic explanation here...With the sudden hard shift your crankshaft will slow faster than the parasidic pullieys can keep up with ....So that small speed difference makes the serp. belt (not supercharger belt since there isn't one)do a little squeal....It is the serp. belt squealing and not Josh being giddy in the drivers seat.. Which can be cured by a Goodyear Gatorback serp. belt..
