Ive got an odd situation. Ive got a 98 4.6 3.55 rear auto with the 4R-70W tranny. Trucks got 53-54k on it and it sees a strict regular maintence schedule, most of which I can do myself. I was sitting at a light about 3 weeks ago, and i got into the gas a little in first gear, hitting about 25-30 in 1st gear. About 1-2 seconds before it shifted, i heard a whirling, slipping noise which sounded like it was coming from the tranny. I couldnt feel any slip in the pedal, but as soon as it shifted into 2nd, it stopped. Well when I hit about 45 in 2nd, i heard the same sound. I thought it was perhaps the fan belt slipping since i had just ran the truck thru the car wash. I have a gatorback belt now ready to install. It stopped for a couple weeks but today it came back It almost sounds like something spinning that is out of balance, like a whirling slip. Not too loud, but to a 'car guy', its definetely there. I hope that this is not my tranny that is slipping and will needing replacing. The tranny was serviced (fluid/filter) around 35k, so 18k has gone by since its last service. Fluid is full and i cant feel any signs of metal on the dipstick; feels smooth and looks red and clean. I need some help here....any comments are appreciated.....
I'm not a tech but we have the same truck mechanically. In 1999 my transmission was slipping between 2nd and 3rd. I took it in under warranty and I'm looking at the repair receipt now and it says they - remove and install or replace "main control valve body".
If I was you I wouldn't be driving it till you get it fixed so a little problem doesn't become a big one. Good luck. Maybe it's time for a transgo shift kit?

well mines out of warrenty...but i might be able to get them to put in a tranny at no cost. I really dont want to have this done though.
how much is a shift kit? how easy are they to install? what kind of gains, etc can i expect?
I think it's just the nature of the beast dude. My grandmothers best friend has a 98 Grand MArquis with the 4.6 and my friends stepmother has 94 Grand Marquis with the 5.0. Both make the same whiney noise, both been doing it since new, not one problem reported. My Ranger does it but it;s not as loud and my F150 did it too. I'm thinking that most trannies are like that in First, they moan, whine, cry, piss, bitch, LOL! No serious, I have heard alot of Ford Trannies in first. I'm thinking it's just the nature of the beasts, everything is I'm sure is ok,,,,,,,91
