Question What determines Tranny type?

I just sold my Superduty powerstroke (that's another story)and bought a used 2001 Screw with 22k on it (with the 5.4)...... Thanks to the info on this sight I was able to determine the rear(3.55LS) and tranny (4R70W). My question is, what configuration determined the tranny to be the 4R70W and not the 4R100.....? My powerstroke had the 4R100, my wife's 2000 Expy also has the 4R100 (5.4). Why then does this Screw have the 4R70W? I'm just concerned about not having a beefier tranny for towing my 21' boat....

Hope this helps

Try this site. You should be able to match up your pan gasket and find out what type of tranny you have.http://www.bulkparts.com/MM011.ASP?pageno=1211

Good luck Steve

Thanks, I was able to pull that info off the door pillar sticker. What I'm curious about is that my 01 Screw (5.4) has the 4R70W tranny, while my wife's 2000 Expedition (5.4) has the 4R100. Seems to me her vehicle has the better tranny for towing.
