e40d vs 4r70w or swapping them

which transmission is better e40d or 4r70w? I am pulling a 5.4 v8 motor out of a wrecked 98 expedition to replace my knocking 4.2 v6 in my 97 f150. The expedition has the e40d and 4wd but my f150 has the 4r70w with 2wd. Any body have any suggestions? Will the 4r70w bolt up to the 5.4 motor? can I change the tailhousing reasonably on the 4wd trans to put in my 2wd truck?

You can easily change the tailhousing to a tailhousing from a 2wd 4R100. The tailhousing from the 4R70W won't fit.

You'll also need to change the output shaft. That involves a total teardown of the transmission.

I don't think the 4R70W from a V6 will last very long behind the 5.4L.

Make sure to change the PCM and all the wiring, too. If you mix and match transmissions, wiring, and PCMs you'll end up with something that does not work.

4r70w's are behind most 5.4l's, including mine.

The 4R70W behind the V6 has less clutch plates and some weaker parts than the 4R70W behind the 5.4L.
