Possible tranny problem?

Whenever I rev the engine up, or let off on the gas pedal, I hear a sound that resembles metal on metal grinding. It isn't a loud sound, I can't hear it with the radio on. But it just started a few days ago. Could it be a transmission problem? Thanks for any help of ideas.
