2003 F150 with 4.6 Engine

The automatic transmission dip stick says to use Mercon V. What kind of transmission do I have in this truck? I have looked in the service manual and from what I can gather I don't have to change the transmission fluid at 30000 miles. What is the change interval? Thanks.

You have a 4R70W transmission.

30,000 miles is the proper change interval, in my opinion.

You need to use the Mercon V.

Every 30k just get a fluid flush (17 qts) , no need to drop the pan and change the filter.

Cool

My 2001 'Screw Service Manual says to change the filter & fluid @ 30,000 miles...

As far as I know, if it's a 4R70W (which it probably is) then it probably has the same service requirements.

I have read that the newer manual trannies (like wyoming references) are also using ATF, but they do not abuse the stuff like a torque converter / valve body / bands / etc. do.

I typically find Mercon V hard to get in my area. Auto Zone has it hit or miss, so when I see it I buy a case.

BTW, B & M sells a drain plug kit that you should consider. Makes the next one not quite so messy...

I would recommend changing the filter everytime you flush (or drain both the trans & TC).
