Question F150 Whine

Hi,
I'm new to this group but not new to Fords. I currently drive a 2000 F150XLT supercab 4X4, 4.6 w/ 5 speed. The vehicle has about 49,000 miles on it, has always been maintained and has never seen serious off road use. Now to my problem.... Saturday a very suspicious whine started on the way home from a trip to the beach. It's not a tire whine, more something comming from the transfer case area. Has this happened to anyone on the list??? I'm really concerned. I've had the wheels off to check the calipers and rear axle everything seems OK. Jacking the truck up and letting the truck run in 2nd gear the sound really seems to be in the transfer case. Any help would be appreciated B4 I go to the dealer and see how much they want to charge!

Thanks in Advance

Chris

I know you said that this problem just started.....but could you have just noticed the sound that has been going on for awhile?

Another question...do you have a floor mounted shifter?

I posted a similar question awhile back (although not sure if we are hearing the same sound or not)

Don't know if this helps or not....but I noticed no one was replying so I put my 2 cents in.

Hi again,
Thanks for the quick responses. Yes the t-case fluid is probably overdue for a change. I did notice that they're using automatic trans fluid in these now.... all my old 4X's and jeeps had regular gear case fluid in them. Yes, the truck does have a floor shifter... and this is definately a new sound considering I usually have the window down a little even in winter. What I think the problem is, actually is a bad pinion bearing. My brother called last night to inquire about the noise (he's a wrench on big const equip) and suggested when the dealership replaced the pinion seal in June that they didn't pre-load the bearing with the proper torque when they re-assembled the unit. Well it looks like it's off to the dealer.
