plastic plug thingie in trans pan, needed?

Ok... changed transmission fluid today 97 f150, v8, auto trans when i pulled the pan and the filter out i found this little plastic thingie in the pan. It looked like a spinning top but smaller and it had a little rubber gasket around the fat part. anyway, i looked and looked and couldn't find where it goes. so i put the thing back together without it. anybody knows what that was? do I need it? truck rusn fine without it... for about a half hour so far anyway thanks, sal

HI!... Don't worry about it. Just throw it away. It's a plug used at the factory to plug the hole where the trans dipstick tube goes. FORD uses this plug to keep dust/dirt from entering the tranny. At the factory when they install the dipstick tube they just push it into the tranny pan instead of taking it out. It's harmless and won't hurt anything. You did the right thing by discarding it.

Don't worry about it. You're not the 1st to find that plug and wonder what it's for.

Gee, I would help if Ford would mention it in the factory manual. My '95 Ford book doesn't say a thing about it.
