5 Speed Cost?????

Kinda long winded story, my 97 4x4 with a 5 speed had the tranny rebuilt, new clutch etc back in May, three weeks ago took it back in because it was hard to shift into first. They worked on it got it back and still the same problem if not worse. I was traveling for work a bit so finally got it back in to the dealer last Monday. They replaced the 1-2 syncros and blocking rings and did some other items. Finally got it back today and as I am driving home from the dealer I go to shift in overdrive and nothing, try it again and now it pops outta gear. Christ!!! WTF now. Take it back to the dealer and leave it again.
Had a POS 03 Taurus since last week for the rental, now I got a POS03 Cavalier damn thing sounds, runs like the wifes vibrator only with wheels. No idea how long they will take this time.

Now on to the ???? of the day, how much does a new 5 speed tranny cost? MY extended warranty runs out in less than a thousand miles and granted for a period of time my dealer will warranty the problems with the tranny but I put heavy mileage on it and then I am out of luck as well as having to pay for a rental. Seriously considering hurling myself into further debt and buying a new truck.
Thoughts?

I threw that in as a joke about the noise of the current rental I am stuck in. Maybe it has scared away any responses except for yours.

Make a stink at the dealer. If you've been having issues for a while they should do something. These 5-speeds aren't the smoothest, even new. Thoes of us with them know all too well the different quirks they have. I'm sure the dealerships have heard them all!

I couldn't tell you how much a tranny costs. I'd guess around 5k. Maybe a new truck is the answer if you've got high miles. I would make a stink before I put myself further into dept though.

A lot of woman have vibrators. I don't see any problem with them as long as it's not a replacement for.....
I don't know about a car that runs like a vibrator though. That doesn't sound good!

Good luck!

Rugby 3,

First, after repeated attempts to fix your original trans. its time you demand a new one!

If all eles fails, go to www.car-part.com . I just checked and two trans. that will fit a 1997 v8 4x4 F-150 standard trans. showed up in your home state of N.H. price was $750 and $950 !!!!!

If your willing to drive out of state or pay shipping, you would be able to find the newest manual trans. possible for your application.

I used the site to find a 2002 auto trans. and converter with 2000 miles on it for our 1999 Firebird for a total price of $600 buck!

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply Iron Horse. I didn't even think to use that site. I will see what they say tomorrow morning at the dealer. I have lucked out with my dealer, they treat me pretty good.

I had simliar probs with my tranny when I bought my truck. I took it in and went on a short drive with the tech and showed him the problems. He agreed. They ended up giving me a FQR (Ford Quality Rebuild) tranny. They said it would be cheaper and easier than fixing my tranny. Althought the FQR is better, like wittom says these trannys do have their "quirks". So raise hell if you need to, to get your tranny replaced!
