4WD help!!!!

I'm having problems with my 4wd and I'm wondering if you guys/gals could help me trouble shoot it.
I have a 97 F-150 automatic with the turn on 4wd. The 4wd has worked fine for months now today on a backroad I tried to put it in and no 4wd. I tried 4wd low range and the tranny definitely went into low range but still no 4wd. Is there any way to trouble shoot the actuator on top of the front axle?? Is there a way to check the vacuum there(pulling off the vacuum lines or something to that effect without damaging anything) or just check the vacuum period so I can rule out the vacuum pump? The lights are coming on in the dash and I checked all the fuses so that seems to be working and it feels like the transfer is engaging just no power to front wheels. Any help would greatly be appreciated and I'll try to answer any questions if you have any.

Thanx
Jeff
