1995 F150 Tow Vehicle?
Hey guys, I started an account here so I could get some much needed advice. I just bought a 1995 Wilderness 22' Travel Trailer weighing in about 3300lbs dry. I have two choices for a tow vehicle and really need help deciding on which to use. I will have to install trailer brake controller and class III hitch on one of these.
I have a 1995 F150 reg cab XLT 4x4 5.0l V8 with 3.31 ratio. Automatic transmission. Manual states about a 6800 tow capacity. 160,000 miles
I also could use my 1992 Explorer Eddie Bauer. 4.0l V6 4x4 3.27 ratio. Also an automatic. 104,000 miles
Of course the F150 seems like a no brainer, however my explorer is in way better shape. Also has less miles, and new radiator new brakes new tires. My F150 needs all those ugh. Money is tight so I could use some advice. F150 has alot of rust on the frame which concerns me. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks to all.

I towed a 22' #5000 GVWR TT (the dry weight does not mean anything.. ) with a 97 F150 with a 5.4 and 3.55 gears and it was a good tow, but the truck was over it's GVWR and rear GAWR.. Yet, I had over 255,000 miles on it when I traded it in for the 13 and it was still running great.
I was in 2nd gear on the hills/grades and could barely hold OD on the flats (unless there was a tail wind!)
Get the tires updated and keep the fluids fresh and you should be okay... You'll have to rev the heck out of it on the hills/grades and stay out of OD on the flats, so if that is okay with you, your 95 F150 will be okay too..
Good luck!

I once towed a 25' Layton TT 600 miles each way on vacation with a 86 F150 SWB 2wd. It had the 302 V8 with a 3 speed C6 with no lockup TC and 3.08 rear. From Raleigh NC to Orlando FL and back, i had no trouble maintaining 65mph. Actually, the rpm at 65 was right at the peak torque of the engine.
