7700 series towing

i know that people don't recommend towing a 5th wheel with an f150 truck. i have searched it and read it over and over again.

my question is would the 7700 series f150's be able to handle a 5th wheel or would that kind of a trailer be to much for my truck?
its a 2002 ford f150 7700 4x4 with the 5.4

second question is does anyone have the towing specs for these trucks? my owners manual doesn't say anything about the 7700 series truck.

thanks!

Also see ~ page 190 ( 2002 owner manual, 4th printing) for some GCWR and trailer weight numbers - yours are the ones with the 5.4L / 4:10 rear axle combo ...

I'll let the usual suspects advise you on 5th-wheel towing .

But it's not a superduty, so the gvw isn't there

You probably have about 2500 pounds of payload on a 7700 package F-150. That's enough for some of the lightest fifth wheels. Spend the $10 and get your truck weighed at a local CAT certified scale. Subtract from 7700 for your actual payload.

Keep in mind a hitch is around 200 pounds. Keep the 5er under 8k pounds GVWR and I think it will do fine.

Depends on the 5th wheel of course... I've seen smaller ones that look like a slide in camper with wheels on them being towed by little 4 banger 'Yotas'. They probably didn't weigh more then #3500...

If it's one of those 30+ foot jobs where a 6'3" person can stand up in the upper bedroom area, then I'd say no way...

As was said, it'll depend on what your actual 'payload' amounts are on the truck and not what it says for your "Tow Rating" in any manual....

Mine says I can tow a #7700 trailer... Well, when I hitch up a #5000 TT, I exceed my trucks GVWR and it's rear GAWR by several hundred pounds.... So much for that "Tow Rating"...

Even the big, bad F250's and F350's towing those monsters are probably exceeding their individual truck ratings too....

Best advice is from APT and get your truck weighed and go from there.... Figure out how much you can load up the truck and the rest will work itself out...

Good luck!

Mitch

thanks for the replies. there are some 5er's that i feel i could tow safetly but there are also some bumper pulls that would work a little better.

well reason for this is that my wife and i are moving to wyoming so i can attend wyotech and she can go to university of wyoming. lots of cold weather.

anyway another question for you guys is what kind of trailers do you guys have and do they work for wyoming weatheror tons of snow? i know this is a towing forum for trucks but i figure talking about trailers is ok.

If you want to know about tt's or 5r's go to rv.net, lots of stuff there, look for arctic fox, or Nash, , made by Northwood, they have a nice 4 seasons camper line up.

That 5.4 2 valve is going to be wheezing the first time you hit the mountains with it pulling 7k or so........
