Cruise control and towing?

I have a 2006 5.4 screw 3.55 LS gears. I'll be pulling a trailer to Florida this Christmas. Trailer weight with cargo would be approx 2500 lb's. Will I be able to use cruise control?

Thanks

Mark

As the owners manual states, do not use cruise while towing.

Learn something new every day. I never knew you were not supposed to use cruise control while towing.

Probably biggest reason is lag in case of an emergency. That and also more downshifting when the cruise is trying to keep a steady speed.

With that load, you can probably get away with it on totally flat hwy runs.... But, as the others have stated, it's not something you would want to do on a regular basis...

The CC will want to get you back to your set speed as soon as it can, so if you start to slow down on a slight grade, it'll start giving it gas to pick up speed.. Since you have something tied to your butt that is making this harder to do, it presses the gas more... Soon, it'll just 'floor it' to get back to it's set speed and that's not what you really need it to do..

You would probably do best not using it at all, but your road conditions will be your major factor.. Flat and no head wind and you can get away with it for the most part...

You will probably be able to run in OD with that load, so don't fret too much on that part.. Lock out OD if it starts shifting in and out of OD as that's harder on it then just running the higher RPMs for long periods of time.

2500# is nothing, you should be able to use it everywhere except in the mountains. I use mine all the time when I'm towing with my manual tranny in 5th.

I balance off the safety issue with the advantage of speed control and it being less tiring to drive.

I personally use cruise if I have the space on the highway all the time. I've run truck harder the 99% of the owners out there and have never lost a engine or trans. My 03 F-150 I ran 35s w/ a correct speedo and 3.55s and used cruise all the time, never once had a issue even pulling my XJ on a 18' 3200 lb trailer. My 06 silverado the same way without fail, even the new expedition without issue.
