Question Is it Ok to Use an Equalizer WDH with Just a 5x10ft open Utility Trailer?

Most of the time, I'm only going to have maybe less than 500lbs on the trailer.
Once in awhile, I may have a load of 1000lbs or so.

Right now, the trailer rides pretty straight unless it's real windy.
I don't want any sway issues and no worries.

Is it worth the money to pickup the Equalizer?

Thanks for any help.

Randy

pretty light load for WD hitch

sure you can do it... but you are probably better off with a sway control bar instead of a WD bar set up if sway is all you are trying to control. It will also be a less expensive solution.

I wouldn't use WD or sway control on any single axle trailer. Never had a problem exceedign speed limits in my truck. How small are the wheels/tires?

Question

The trailer wheels size is 15in.

Come to think of it, It's possible in the future I may upgrade to an enclosed trailer.

I don't mind spending the $400 for the Equalizer if it'll solve the occasional sway right now and prepare me for a larger or enclosed trailer.

What do you guys think?

if you are getting 'sway' from a 5x10 utility trailer, then either the trailer design is crap or you are not loading it correctly...

With that light of a load (under #500 tongue weight), you don't need a WD setup at all and even if you did put one on, it won't really be doing much WD..

Put your heavy stuff up front and the lighter stuff in the back and it should tow straight as an arrow..

If not, then the trailer design is wrong, meaning the trailer axle is not back far enough on the trailer to tow properly...

Good luck!

Mitch

Mitch,

It only sways when it's really windy.
It doesn't happen often but it's enough to be concerned.

I'm looking to eliminate any sway, have more control if possible and be somewhat future proof with the Equalizer.

Thanks,

Randy

I understand what you are saying, but have to agree with Mitch that either it is loaded incorrectly or something is wrong with the trailer. I have driven through several very windy storms with my 6x10 and never had a hint of sway. And have pulled cars through near tornados with little problem with a car hauler. The whole truck and trailer might move, but not just the trailer.

For the $400 or so for the WD hitch you are talking about getting you can make a half payment on a new 5x10 trailer.

FWIW, my landscape trailer is 6.5x12' with 15" wheels. Never any sway issues, but we don't get much wind in Michigan.

Sounds like you need more tounge weight, not less with the WD setup.
