Towing and OD

I was wondering if i have to, or should turn off the Over Drive when towing? I'm towing a small 12' aluminum fishing boat (outboard motor), so theres not all to much weight to it.

I'd suggest taking 30 seconds out of your busy day and doing a search in this forum. The EXACT question has been asked and answered 5 billion times. Just on the first page in this forum alone there is a 2 page thread dealing with this.

Since apparently the search button option is turned off on your computer the answer to your questions is yes tow in OD. Only turn off OD if the trans is hunting between gears trying to maintain speed. With that HUGE trailer you're pulling you'll be fine.

Wow, could you have been anymore of a dick about it? Why even bother replying if your going to be that way. You could of simply ignored my post as to not get your panties all in a twist. Takes a big man to insult someone on the internet, congrats and thank you for your kind words.

The information is availible in your owners manual as well as many places here. Leave OD on unless you notice the trans shifting or unlocking the torque convertor frequently. There is not rule that says towing over xxxx pounds leave it off. Every towing experience is differrent. Someone towing 7000 pounds with it on is not the same as another person towing 2000 pounds. Speed, gearing, tire sizes (affects gearing), road terrain all affect how the truck will perform.

As to why powerstroke wrote that, I understand as I read these forums daily. For someone like you who may not see the same questions asked 5 billions times, we recommend using the search within the towing forum for this type of question. If a question has already been answered you find out quicker that waiting for someone to reply.

Ok, well i havent been in these for that long and i have only actually came on here a few times (most recently with the purchase of my new truck). So i was unaware at how testy people can get over a silly simply question, regardless of if its been asked so many times (which i did not know). But i thank you for your answer and being civil about it, its appreciated. And i will definetly do as suggested and search to try and find an answer before i post. Thanks.

I find that I will turn OD off even when I'm not towing anything... Driving in the mountains with long grades running empty there are times it still needs to be in 3rd.. Sometimes, the computer just does not know how to handle varying driving conditions and needs some actual human input..

My wife drives me crazy when she is driving the truck on long road trips in the mountains... She would let it shift in and out of OD going up a long grade, all the while giving it gas and letting off... UGGHHH... I will press the button when it first downshifts and keep it off until we reach the top and then turn it back on when we reach the top. I now just have to tell her when to turn it off and turn it on in those situations...

Same thing applies when towing... I also manually pull the gear shift into 2nd when the hills require it as well...

Good luck!

Mitch

Now if I had ignored your post newbs like you wouldn't ever learn anything. If nothing gets said the crap continues on. To be perfectly honest with you, alot of the basic newb questions that people have have been asked over and over and over again. This goes for almost any forum. Heck even when I have a question the first thing I do is search, then post as a last resort. Rarely have I had to start a new thread with a question. You can usually learn much more information much faster by using the search than waiting for people to reply to a post. I've also seen alot of posts like this that nobody will ever answer because its the same old questions.

just turn OD off, cheap insurance, no need to over heat the trans.

If i'm headin downhill I might turn it back on...

I understand its easy to ask, vs. research. i understand powerstroke came off as a "dick" but you also shoudl look around a little bit more bud. This literally is asked ALWAYS and discussed regularly. I also would suggest not responding so harshly to long standing member like powerstroke. You are a new guy here, make some friends first, ignore whom ever you choose. Just my 2 cents anyways, we were all new guys once. Anyways, welcome to the looney bin, bud.

Ok, understandable. And i will definetly search before i ask a question and only post if i absolutely cant find the answer. I do feel you could of been a little nicer about it, but it does make sense and i apologize for my retaliation. I'v never really needed to ask much in a forum before but i am just such a newb with this truck.

I'd much rather not make an internet enemy, if such a thing is possible. So hopefully you dont hold a grudge because i definetly wont. And i will most certainly do as suggested and search first and foremost.

Thanks for the welcome, i do enjoy this "looney bin" lol.
I shouldnt of responded the way i did, and apologized in my previous post to him. You guys all seem very knowledgeable so i'll do as suggested and search first. I'll just chalk it all up to learning the ropes.

By the way, nice truck. It looks like mine except mines all stock right now.

Probably was a tad harsh, but a $750 repair bill for the F250 doesn't sit well so I was not in a good mood. Damned fuel pump That little saga still isn't over.
