Bumper Pull Vs Gooseneck & GVWR
Can someone please tell me what the difference is between towing from your bumper and hauling like a gooseneck or 5th wheel? Can you "haul more weight than you can "tow". I'm considering a 5800# gooseneck trailer and I'm not sure if my 01 f150 supercrew 5.4 can handle it. That's the empty weight, loaded will be around 8K-8.5K. Also, will getting one of those power chips help and where can I get one..............

#5800 is #5800, no matter if it's a gooseneck or a bumper pull as far as the truck getting down the road is concerned......
In general, a gooseneck or a 5th wheel type of trailer will handle better then the bumper pull trailer (less sway).
The "trade off" is that the gooseneck or 5th wheel trailer will usually have about 20-25% of it's Gross Trailer Weight as pin weight. Where a bumper pull trailer will only have 10-15% of GTW as tongue weight.
So, that #5800 gooseneck will probably put #1160-#1450 of weight on the truck. The #5800 bumper pull will only have about #580-#870 of weight on the truck.
That's the biggest problem with F150's is that most do not have enough payload cap to be able to handle any decent sized 5th wheel.
You also run out of rear GAWR pretty fast too....
In my case, I max out my trucks GVWR when I hitch up my #4500 travel trailer (bumper pull
) I've only got about #550 of tongue weight, but when I also have the bed loaded up with firewood, tools, bikes and other stuff, the weight adds up quick!
