The old squeaky pitman

Hi there ..... as mentioned repeatedly on here I hae the dreaded squeaking steering problem. I know many people in here have greased and fixed this problem themselves, but has anyone got any info on ford fixing it? cost parts etc? Isn't filling the boot just a band aid cure? Any info would be of help THX

I greased mine about 30,000 miles back and it hasn't been a problem.

The Ford fix is always to replace a part. Why do you think there's no grease fitting

Cost is around $80.00 parts and labor.

Angry

I have a 1997 F-150. I too have this squeaky pitman arm, because when I turn my steering wheel it squeaks and drives me crazy. When I turn the wheel left or right to pull into a public lot I get so embarased, because everyone looks. I e-mailed Ford to let them know about my problem or to see if there was any recalls on this matter and they called me back (shocking) they said to take it in to my local dealer to have it evaluated, of course I will have to pay for the eval. and from that they will determine what it is. All of us F-150 owners with this problem should e-mail or call Ford at 1-800-392-3673 to let them know about this, maybe it's just a bad design and we shouldn't have to pay a cent for this repair.

Angry squeeking fords

My 1999 Ford F150 just started making a noise in the pass front side. It sounds like it's coming from the steering arm. Because I bouhgt my truck 3yrs and 3months ago (32,000 miles), Ford dealer said sorry 'bout your luck. I am going to try to grease the steering arm and ball joints by using a needle insert. Any suggestion or ideas if this will work? I'm so happy with Ford right now!!!!!!

It will probably cost you around $225 to get it replaced. That was just two shops that i looked into. Ford will probably be around the same price. I know that mine needs to be replaced also, but im thinking about trying to do it myself. Will definitely save a lot.

$80

I dont think a Ford tech can scratch there ***** for $80. They damn sure arent going to replace a pitman arm for it.
I was one of the first to post about the needle gun lube trick and haven't heard a peep from mine in the past couple years. I check the front end for an play every couple months and there is still no play in that joint. As far as a band aid, I don't think so, There should be a zerk there from the plant.
Poke it, grease it, seal it!
The noise is embarrasing for all Ford truck owners.

Pitman Arm . XL3Z3590AA . $34.45

0.6 Hours labor.

Pitman Shaft . F6AZ3575AA . $121.02

1.7 Hours Labor.

The pitman/selector shaft is located above the steering gear, but it's the pitman arm itself that squeeks.

Well Ford Corp. called my local Ford dealership and set up a appointment to have this fixed, my cost a $50 deductable. My truck has 65,000 miles on it, so it was way out of my extended warranty. I guess "the squeaky wheel does get oiled" after all. Call or e-mail Ford Corp. like I did so they know about this failed part and so we don't just put a Band-aid on it.

I went and bought a grease needle from the part store for $5. Worked great. Took about 40 miles and the squeek is gone. I lubed and sealed the rest just to be safe. Thanks for the help guys.

My 97 did the same thing. I would get embarassed when turning into a parking lot. I picked up a grease needle from Kitt Tools for $1.89, hooked it up to my grease gun, stuck the needle into the boots and squirted some grease sealed the hole with super glue, and it's fixed...

Well my local dealer fixed this sqeaky pitman arm and it cost me $16.25, not $50 like they said the deductable would cost. They put a new pitman arm and fitting, not a band aid fix . NO MORE SQUEAK FINALY. Thank you Ford Corp.

You'd probley buy another from them. My dealer up here didn't give a hoot about my problem. No more Fords from this dealer if I ever do get another one.

Did you contact Ford Corp.? Because that is what I did and they set up the rest. Becuase when I called my dealer they said the repair would be ~$200.

My 00 Supercab has the grease nipples at the top and bottom of the pitman arm. I greased the arm today and no squeek. Now if I could only fix the squeeking a-arm bushings. . .
