Front suspension wheel play _ How much is allowable?

I have an 05 FX4. Here lately the ride quality has gone down the toilet. If I ran over a penny I could feel it. I took it and had the tires balanced and rotated. I had an alignment done at the same time. The ride quality is still horrible but it doesnt pull to the right anymore.

I put the front end on jack stands and held each of the front tires at 3' and 6'. I pulled with one hand and pushed with the other. There was about an inch of horizontal back and forth play. There was no vertical play though.

I started looking around and noticed the ball joints moving some. I purchased this truck used with 65,xxx miles on it.

Is a small amount of horizontal movement in the wheels acceptable?

I appreciate the advice. I would like to go in and sound somewhat knowledgeable as to why I am demanding my money back. Based on your reply I'm assuming there shouldnt be any horizontal play in the wheels?
