Cool grinding noise coming from rear

just recently i my rear started making a grinding noise. i was driving it one day and the the abs kicked in and the the abs light came on. i checked the brakes and they needed replaced. upon doing so i took the truck down the road and when i let off the accelarator there was a grinding type noise load one. a noise that would make any ford truck owner cringe. i have thought of numerous possibilities. axles, gears, bent housing but i havent the clue to know where to begin. someone suggested i check the u joints. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
