Converting 2WD to 4WD- what would it take?

2wd-4wd
What year is the XLT that they want to trade straight across for? Because if your truck and his are relatively close in year, condition, and equiptment it might not be a bad way out for you. 4WDs normally cost more initially, so that might justify the offset in mileage. Just be careful!

The truck is an XLT '06 i have an STX '08.
It has the exact same options, just the XLT has chrome bumpers and grey carpet, i have PTM bumpers and rubber floor.
I do liek the carpet, but i like my PTM bumper.
I have 12,000 miles it has 24,000 i believe.
I'm probably making the trade next week.

RJ,
Sounds like a deal to me. As long as all things are fairly equal, I'd say this might be the answer to your problem. I do know one thing for sure, I've worked on alot of cars and trucks in my time and can tell you that the conversion you wanted to do would have been a handful on the older trucks. I can't imagine what a newer one would be like. And if you had done a straight axle swap it most likely would have destroyed the ride integrity and handling of a once nice truck. Best of luck and let us know how you did!

Do you need 4wd for off road use or for daily driving on snow covered roads? I drive a 2wd truck, with non LSD, stock Hankooks and no weight in the back. On top of that, I live in Vermont and we get much more snow than Maryland.
Sure I'd like a 4x4 (last truck I had was a 2008 GMC Canyon 4x4) but I bought this due to the 5 speed manual transmission.
Just curious...

well, we obviously don't get as much snow as vermont. but i spend a lot of time in PEI, Canada throught the year. and i need it for that, even in summer, many of the roads are dirt roads and it just helps out when those roads get wet.
I'm also working an on and off part time construction job and most of the sites are dirt, soft dirt at that, and i've had 5 or 6 occasions where i've had to be pulled out by 4WD's.
I do also plan on doing a bit of off roading.
I have 2.5 inches of lift on the 2WD, and with a 4 wheel drive i plan on adding another 6 inches on top of that.
Those are the main reasons i need 4WD
as for snow here in Maryland- it's snowed once here- mainly iced. haha i couldnt get up my steep driveway though- had to throw some old tires in the bed to get up.
