I was told that 33/12.50R20 's will be the biggest tire a 2wd with a leveling kit can fit. I have seen the 285/55R20 on a stock 2wd several times.

I am actually about to do this same thing this weekend. 2.5 AS and 295/70/17 Nitto TG's on OEM wheels. I was told that was the biggest size I could go with. Your 20" wheels may allow you to go bigger since they will be wider. I am sure Wandell will respond to this as well. He is really good with tire/wheel sizes.

A 285/55-20 is basically a 33x11.50 tire while a 305/55-20 is essentially a 33x12.50 tire. You should be able to fit either with a leveling kit and the correct wheel specs, but it will be tight. I wouldn't go wider than a 9 inch wheel or less than 5 inches of backspacing.

yeah my mud terrains are 285/70/r17 i think those are about 32.5 if im not mistaken. so then i need a wider rim? i dont really like the look when the tire sticks out of the fender will this happen with a 9? and how do i figure out back spacing or what is that? sorry for all the questions. and thanks

Backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel (where it bolts to the hub) to it's rear lip. A 285/70-17 is essentially a 33x11.50 tire. It will work fine on a 7 to 9 inch wide wheel.

I don't think you'd have any problem mounting a 305 on an 8.5" rim. Let me know when you get them mounted. I'd like to see some pics.
